Programs - Standard Year 9/10 Programs

Outline

BOEC runs a variety of programs using a wide range of activities. The centre currently offers a range of 7 non-winter programs, and 1 winter program. It should be noted that programs may have to be altered at short notice due to unseasonable conditions etc. All programs are co-educational.

Non-winter programs

Typically these programs operate in terms 1, 2 and 4, (Feburary to June and October to December) and are of 5 or 6-days duration (Monday - Friday or Saturday) with students generally arriving about 1.30pm on Monday and departing at 10.00am on Friday or Saturday.

Program 1 - Extended Rockclimbing - 5 day

CSF related outcomes - Challenge, safety, teamwork, initiative, confidence, technical skills and environmental-awareness.

A well-rounded and complete package for producing excellent outcomes. The highlight of the week for students is our mountain-bike ride together with a 20-metre, challenging abseil & climb at Strawberry Saddle rockface - both on the breathtaking Bogong High Plains. A unique program with engaging and challenging adventure activities.

Activities: initiatives, mountain bike riding, basic & extended rockclimbing and abseiling, high ropes, environmental studies, social activities and a choice of one of the following: canoeing, orienteering, pioneering or rock hop (1st term only).

  • Teachers can download a copy of the Extended Rockclimbing Timetable as a Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet, view it on screen or print it out. To download please click on the following link:

Program 2 - Rogaining - 5 day

CSF related outcomes - Challenge, safety, teamwork, initiative, confidence, leadership, technical skills and environmental-awareness.

We believe this is one of our best programs in terms of outcomes for students. This is a rigorous, outdoor, group activity involving navigation - that is, a 'rogaine', with the use of map and compass. Shadowed by staff, small groups of students are given the freedom to operate independently as they traverse through open, snowgum woodland on the Bogong High Plains.

Activities: initiatives, orienteering, rogaine, high ropes, environmental studies, basic rockclimbing and abseiling and social activities.

Program 3 - Overnight Bushwalk or Extended Rockclimbing - 5 day

CSF related outcomes - Challenge, safety, teamwork, initiative, confidence, leadership, technical skills, tolerance and environmental-awareness.

To walk among historical huts, creaking snowgums and the windswept peaks of the Bogong High Plains is, we believe, to learn in the best classroom of all. An overnight journey to a remote alpine camp site engages students in environmental issues and allows them to experience minimal-impact practices and to develop self management and leadership skills. A challenging program where tolerance and teamwork are critical.

Activities - Overnight bushwalk: initiatives, environmental studies, high ropes, bushwalk and social activities.

Activities - Extended rockclimbing: initiatives, mountain bike riding, basic & extended rockclimbing and abseiling, high ropes, environmental studies, social activities and a choice of one of the following: canoeing, orienteering, pioneering or rock hop (1st term only)

Note: 48 students are accommodated by two programs that are run simultaneously. 24 students will do the Overnight bushwalk , the other 24 will do program 1 above - Extended rockclimbing program . This bushwalk has some excellent outcomes and is suitable for the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Program 4 - Overnight Bushwalk - 6 day (1 night out)

CSF related outcomes - Challenge, safety, teamwork, initiative, confidence, leadership, tolerance and environmental-awareness.

This program combines the best of program 3 above - Overnight bushwalk program together with a swag of group activities. The outcomes for this program are the same as program 3 above.

Activities: initiatives, environmental studies, high ropes, bushwalk, basic rock climbing, social activities and a choice of one of the following: canoeing, orienteering, pioneering, mountain bike riding or rock hop (1st term only).

  • Teachers can download a copy of the Overnight Bushwalk (1 night out) Timetable as a Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet, view it on screen or print it out. To download please click on the following link:

Program 5 - Overnight Bushwalk - 6 day (2 nights out)

CSF related outcomes - Challenge, safety, teamwork, initiative, confidence, leadership, tolerance and environmental-awareness.

This program extends the best of program 3 above - Overnight bushwalk with an additional night's camp on the magnificent Bogong High Plains. Students are expected to adopt full responsibility for their own leadership and well-being. Also, they will begin to develop a greater appreciation of local environmental issues within the Alpine National Park.

Activities: initiatives, environmental studies, high ropes, bushwalk, social activities and a choice of one of the following: canoeing, orienteering, pioneering, mountain bike riding or rock hop (1st term only).

This bushwalk is suitable for Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Program 6 - Overnight Bushwalk Adventure - 8 days (2 nights out)

CSF related outcomes : Challenge, teamwork, environmental-awareness, safety tolerance, confidence initiative, technical skills and leadership.

We know that this is one of our best programs. We are offering it again, hoping that teachers and students are inspired to give up a weekend. You will be rewarded by having the time to experience all of the activities that we know engage students and produce the best outcomes. The result is a quality experience.

Activities: initiatives, environmental studies, high ropes, mountain bike riding, basic and extended rock climbing and abseiling, social activities, canoeing, orienteering, pioneering, overnight bushwalk.

Program 7 - Year 7 Activities Program

We will negotiate this program with schools that apply. Please understand that our priority is for students in years 9, 10 and VCE as our equipment suits older students. The outcomes for this program are generally the orientation of students and team building. We usually have this program at the beginning of the year.

Winter - Ski Program

The winter based program is of 5-days duration with students arriving at about 1.30pm on Monday and departing at 10.00am on Friday.

CSF related outcomes: Challenge, technical skills, confidence, safety, participation and environmental-awareness

With winter snow, the alpine landscape transforms into a mystical wonderland. After initial technical instruction by our experienced instructors, students quickly find their ski-legs and learn snow safety and etiquette. Whether students zoom the slopes of Falls Creek resort on downhill skis or glide majestically through the AlpineNational Park on cross country skis, they will also begin to appreciate local environmental issues.

Activities: Downhill skiing, cross country skiing, environmental studies and social activities.

Activities on these ski camps include Cross country skiing, downhill skiing, a day where students choose X-Country or downhill skiing, skiing preparation (fitting of skis, boot & bindings) and also dryland practice on skis in carpeted rooms.

It should be noted that the ski camps are mostly aimed at beginners. Students who can ski well may not find our program suitable for them, and by attending may deprive a non-skier of an ideal introduction to skiing.
