Our School

Bogong Outdoor Education Centre is a multi-campus P-12 residential school (15 Mile Creek Campus and Bogong Campus) within the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD). We are one of 3 schools within the Residential Outdoor Schools Association (ROSA). The other schools are Rubicon Outdoor Centre (Nayook and Rubicon Campus) and Somers School Camp (Somers and Woorabinda Campus).

With our core purpose being to "educate for sustainable living" Bogong Outdoor Education Centre campuses offer primary and secondary school students a wide range of outdoor and environmental education programs and cooperates closely with schools and other users to structure programs which best suit their needs.

A message from our school principal

Hi, my name is Tony Keeble and I am proud to be the Principal of Bogong Outdoor Education Centre.

Bogong is a P-12 Residential School within the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. We comprise 2 campuses - 15 Mile Creek Campus located just outside the town of Benalla in North East Victoria, and the Bogong Campus, situated just below Falls Creek in the north east section of the Victorian Alps.

Our vision is to "educate for sustainable living". To fulfill our vision we tailor programs around five student aims. Broadly, they are around connections with the environment, working and learning in teams, learning to live more sustainably, developing confidence, independence and ability to be adaptive in shaping their own futures.

A message from our patron

Hello, my name is Rob Gell and I have the honour of being the patron of Bogong Outdoor Education Centre.

Bogong's core purpose as a State Government School is to "educate for sustainable living." As a long time environmental activist, I share and endorse this vision and its resulting practices.

Our curriculum

The curriculum at Bogong Outdoor Education Centre is unique in that it has been developed around delivering 'sustainable living' outcomes and that the delivery of our curriculum mainly occurs in the outside classroom. Learning to take action that will result in people living more sustainably is the central learning goal of our curriculum framework.

Students in our classrooms explore the natural environment whilst living and learning in small sustainable groups. It is the outdoor component of our curriculum and teaching that sets us aside from regular school settings.

Our curriculum delivers high quality learning for:

Laying the foundations - Prep to year 4
Building Breadth and Depth - Year 5 to Year 8
Developing pathways - Year 9 and 10

15 Mile Creek Campus

15 Mile Creek Campus is set in a picturesque natural bush setting in North East Victoria.

Students are immersed in a rich and unique learning environment that allows them to explore,
discover, be challenged and enjoy their learning.

15 Mile Creek specialises in educational programs for predominately primary school students as well as
VCE students undertaking Units 1-4 Outdoor & Environmental Studies. Some secondary school programs are also undertaken each year in negotiation with interested schools.

A broad range of programs are offered to our students under the guidance of our teaching
staff, and specific programs are designed by us for each group that visits our school. A wide range of learning activities forms the basis of the programs at 15 Mile Creek. These may include adventure, challenge, nature and interpretive based activities.

Location

15 Mile Creek Campus is nestled in a scenic rural valley in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range. The campus is comprised of 110 hectares of unspoilt bush and adjoins state forest and farming land.

15 Mile Creek is located at Greta South in the Myrrhee Valley 220kms North East of Melbourne, 32km east of
Benalla and 42km south of Wangaratta.

Bogong Campus

The campus is set in a spectacular mountain environment with majestic alpine forests and a sparkling lake as a backdrop. Students attending have easy access to some of Victoria's best alpine country - the Bogong High Plains for program activities. The campus has an extensive and comprehensive range of specialised equipment to support the various programs run throughout the year. Schools attending the campus normally share with at least one other school, working in mixed groups of 12 students.

Location

The Bogong Campus is situated in Bogong Village (700m asl) in the foothills of the Victorian Alps in North East Victoria. Mount Bogong (1,986m) is Victoria's highest peak and is close by. Albury/Wodonga is approx 90 kilometres to the NW, and Melbourne is approx 380 kilometres to the south. The Falls Creek Ski Resort and the Bogong High Plains (1600m asl) is 16km or 30 minutes drive away, which allows quick access to beautiful mountain scenery, wildflowers, walking tracks, rock climbing, mountain biking, rogaining and skiing.

Visiting Teachers play a critical role in improving the learning outcomes for students. Your input into this survey will greatly improve future programs and planning. It will take approximately ten minutes to complete.

The Bogong Outdoor Education Centre School Board includes DEECD and School staff representatives as well as key stakeholders and community members with a range of backgrounds, skills and interests - Parks Victoria, AGL, Falls Creek Resort Management, Mt Beauty Chamber of Commerce.

History

In 2010 Bogong Outdoor Education Centre and the 15 Mile Creek Campus became one school, meaning Bogong Outdoor Education Centre is now a multi campus P-12 residential school.

Due to this new expanded structure, Bogong Outdoor Education Centre has a diverse history - one for the original Bogong Outdoor Education Centre and one for the 15 Mile Creek Campus.

ROSA is made up of 3 State Government Schools, each with 2 campuses:

Rubicon Outdoor Centre - Nayook Campus and Rubicon Campus
Somers School Camp - Somers Campus and Woorabinda Campus

With these 6 campuses across the State, the ROSA Schools provide affordable high quality educational programs for DEECD schools. We empower P-12 students to make a difference in developing beliefs, values, attitudes and behaviours that lead to sustainable living.
